The car was treated to a full respray in the original Mars red approx 10-12 years ago, with minimal bodywork having to be carried out, and has weathered extremely well since. It sounds sweet as a nut with no rattles or knocks, and gives smooth power delivery on the road, and gives a satisfying turn of speed even by modern standards. The 5 speed gearbox is smooth and quiet with no syncro crunch as often associated with this era VW, and gives a very slick and satisfying gear change through that iconic golf ball knob. The brakes are positive and it pulls up square under braking. The suspension has been poly bushed which gives it a fantastic tight feel, with very little body shake whilst retaining great ride quality, which almost defies it being a soft top.
